Mustaluppoa Värriössä - Speckled horsehair in Varrio

Vaikka Värriön ilmaan on tullut viime päivinä ylimääräisiä hiukkasia - Kemijärven metsäpalosta - luonnonpuiston ilma ylipäänsä on hyvin puhdasta.

Ylipäänsä ilman laatu on paranemassa maassamme etenkin siksi, että pahiten ilmaa saastuttavan rikkidioksidin päästöt on saatu koko maamme osalta alenemaan kuudesosaansa 1980-luvulta lähtien. Mustalupon tulevaisuus näyttää siten hyvältä.

Although there have lately been some particles in the Varrio air - due to forest fires south in the Kemijarvi area - the air quality in Varrio Nature Reserve in general is very clean. We can see it in the abundance of Speckled horsehair (Bryoria fuscescens). It is most common on Norway spruce, but it can grow even on Downy birch, like here on the edge of Devil's gorge.

Speckled horsehair is indicator of air quality. It is not found in the surroundings of largest cities. In general, however, the air quality in Finland has improved from 1980s, as emissions of sulphur dioxide emissions have been cut into one sixth. The future of Speckled horsehair looks thus good.
