Tunturikoivu (Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii) on hieskoivun alalaji, joka tunnettiin aiemmin omana lajinaan nimellä Betula tortuosa. Tunturikoivu ei ole hieskoivun ja vaivaiskoivun risteymä, vaikka ulkonäön perusteella voisi niin arvella. Lapissa tunturikoivua on koetellut Suomen mittavin metsätuho, 1960-luvulla. Tunturimittarin toukka nakersi lähes 90 prosenttia Ylä-Lapin koivikoista. Viidenkymmenen vuoden takainen koivutuho näkyy edelleen kaikkialla Ylä-Lapissa. Koivut eivät ole palanneet takaisin tuntureiden kupeille ja laaksoihin. Utsjoella koivutuhosta on jäänyt avotunturiksi, tundraksi 60 000 hehtaaria. - Kuvan (syyskuulta 2004) terve tunturikoivu kasvaa Värriö ykkösen ylärinteessä.


Mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) is subspecies of Downy birch. Earlier the Mountain birch was given a full species status with name Betula tortuosa. Mountain birch is the only tree species in Finland which has suffered from massive insect damage. The autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) attacked Mountain birches in 1960s in northern part of Lapland. In large areas the moth caterpillars ate almost 90 per cent of all Mountain birch leaves and the trees started to die. The damage behind 50 years is still visible in Lapland as the Mountain birches have not yet reforested the slopes of fells and valleys between them. In Utsjoki area 60 000 hectares are still open tundra. - The healthy Mountain birch in the photo (from September 2004) grows in Varrio I fell.
