Riekonmarjan ruska mustiksi marjoiksi - Alpine bearberry turns her ruscacolor into black

Alpine bearberry (Arctosphylos alpina) leaves make the red bottom color for ruska in Lapland fells and smaller hills. When the red color vanishes from the leaves the berry color changes from red to clear black, like here in Varriotunturi fell in the beginning of October 2005.

The yield of Alpine bearberry is very little utilized. Bearberry can however be used in fruits and in sweet mashes. You can pick the berries also in spring, just after the snow. Then the taste is somewhat more acid than the taste just after ruska colors.
